Flagship fields of
research in line
with the region's cutting-edge facilities
INFECTIOLOGY
In this domain, Adebag is using the expertise of Lyonbiopôle
and the Infectiology Innovation Foundation (FInovI).
Lyonbiopole a world competitive cluster
- The cluster is focused on infectious diseases with a comprehensive
approach ranging from diagnostics and prevention (vaccines) up
to treatment, exploring new methods made possible by biotechnology
(therapeutic vaccines, monoclonal antibodies, gene and cell therapy
and more) to build a healthcare shield in order to meet public
health challenges and remain a leader on thriving markets.
- It meets
healthcare and economic challenges: the re-emergence
of infectious diseases and pathologies induced by viral pathogens
(such as virally induced cancers), pandemics, epizootics, the
risk of bioterrorism and more.
- It is active in dynamic markets: the vaccine market is growing by 25% every year, and the diagnostics
market by 6%.
- It is led by firms with the involvement of all
major stakeholders within the cluster’s scope of action
The main strength of this healthcare shield specialized
in infectious diseases is that it incorporates the entire chain
of activity, from identification of a virus to protection of
the populations at risk. Lyonbiopôle is built
upon a particularly advantageous blend of expertise, which
comes from its distinctive know-how in complementary fields:
- Firms working on animal health and human health, a vector for
combined innovation
- A strong link between diagnostics, vaccines
and medical devices that are highly complementary in the approaches
to infectious diseases and new therapies
- Scientific expertise
in functional and industrial biology in Lyon and structural/micro-nanobiotechnologies
in Grenoble

FInovI : Scientific Cooperation Foundation for
Innovation in Infectiology
The initial capital of FINOVI consists of a €13 M grant from
the state and a €3.5 M grant from the founders. There are
9 founders, made up of the main French research and higher education
establishments (CNRS, INSERM, ENS, UCBL, UJF, INRA, INRIA, Institut
Pasteur) and the Lyonbiopôle Centre of Excellence.
The goal of the FINOVI foundation is to develop innovative
research for new therapeutic and preventative solutions against
infectious diseases. The scientific challenges of this
project are manifold:
- To develop cutting-edge knowledge on the molecular
and physiological mechanisms of infection via pathogenic micro-organisms
- To strengthen links between fundamental research and hospital
departments to better tackle public health issues
- To put this
knowledge at the disposal of the Lyonbiopole World Centre of
Excellence in Infectiology so as to reinforce the development
of the French health defence system
- With the combined effort
of these two centres, to propel infectiology research in Lyon
and Grenoble to a level of international excellence and visibility.
The FINOVI foundation is a group of 27 public research units with
over 360 researchers, research teachers and post-docs based in
Lyon or Grenoble . To reach these objectives, it has developed
a research strategy and policy focused around 4 key avenues:
- The development of innovative research projects
- The development
of innovative projects
- The added value dimension
- International recognition and appeal
The resources which will be made available for this strategy on
the Lyon and Grenoble sites aim to:
- attract top-level researchers
- create new teams on a contractual
basis
- launch innovative multidisciplinary research projects
- support
shared technological infrastructures and their related services,
- become a key influential centre of knowledge
