The Lyon Auvergne Rhône-Alpes Cancer Centre (CLARA)
The Lyon Auvergne Rhône-Alpes Cancer Centre (CLARA) is a network
of research teams, institutions and businesses involved in fundamental,
clinical and cross-discipline research in the field of cancer.
The objective of this network is to encourage innovative research
projects, with a perspective to being able to clinically apply the
results obtained from fundamental research, and to situate the region
as a European reference site in the field of cancer diagnosis and
therapy.
CLARA's scientific strategy for the period 2007-2010 is
based around six key research avenues which unite the research
projects:
- Nanotechnology, Imaging and Cancer;
- Infections and Cancer;
- Nutrition and Cancer;
- Epidemiology of Cancer, Human and Social
Sciences, Patient Education and Organisation of Care;
- Therapeutic
Targeting, Modelling and Clinical Research;
- Tumour Escape.
In parallel, the Cancer Centre has launched a programme to organise
the different research activities by pathology. The first
pathological networks to be set up concern cross-discipline neuro-oncology,
neuroendocrine tumours, paediatric oncohaematology and ovarian tumours.
Via a proof-of-concept project support fund, CLARA contributes to
the development of public and private partnerships in the fields
of innovation and technology transfer in oncology. The fund targets
research projects with strong medical and industrial potential that
businesses would be ready to take up in the knowledge that they could
count on the scientific and technological support of the academic
world in order to carry out the necessary animal or human trials
(for preclinical or clinical proof of concept).

Lyon Cancer
Lead by the Lyon Public Hospices, the Leon Bérard regional
centre, the Claude Bernard (Lyon 1) University and the INSERM, the Synergie
Lyon Cancer RTRS * works alongside the scientific and industrial
capacities which form the Lyon Auvergne Rhône-Alpes Cancer
Centre.
Selected from a shortlist of 9 certified projects, its objective
is to generate investment and extra employment in clinical research
with a focus on the treatment of certain cancers (lymphomas, sarcomas,
breast cancers, neuroblastomas and digestive tumours).
(*) Thematic Research and Care Networks ( RTRSs) work to
build links between research and care teams in the objective of bringing
together a critical body of internationally renowned researchers
and doctors united around a common scientific and medical objective.
