Definition of the cluster

A Biocluster is a group of businesses and establishments, concentrated in a single location, which focus on training and fundamental, applied and clinical research, connected to the bio-industry sector and which share local resources, use related technologies, build relationships and partnerships and cooperate in complementary projects.

The Grenoble biocluster relies on an important economical, scientific and university environment:

  • Grenoble is the 11th largest city in France with a population of 430,800
  • Isere région has a GDP of €26 billion
  • It has the 9th largest university complex in France with 61,000 students, of which 16% are international
  • 21,000 people are employed in research: 11,000 in the public and 6,500 in private research sector, and over 200 public laboratories and 4 key international research equipment facilities
  • There are 463,300 people employed in the area of which 97,800 work in the industry sector
  • On average, 5,700 businesses are created or taken over per year
